  • Berkeley Nanotechnology Club:5th annual Nanotechnology Forum
    Date: Sunday, April 27, 2008
Venue: The Haas School of Business on UC Berkeley Campus.

The Forum is the premier venue to learn about the latest in nano research directly from the Bay Area's top research community, to hear about research and development priorities, and to discuss some of the social, economic and political implications of nanotechnology. In 2008, the theme is Prospects: from Ideal to Real, which represents nanotechnology’s transition between laboratory experiments and theory to real products and widely accepted technological advances. This year’s Berkeley Nanotechnology Forum features Dr. Supriyo Datta, the Thomas Duncan Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University and Director of the NASA Institute for Nanoelectronics and Computing, whose research focuses on electronic conduction in nanoscale devices; and Dr. Liwei Lin, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley and Co-director of the Berkeley Sensor & Actuator Center, whose research is at the convergence of nano-bio-solar, using biomimetic photosynthetic electrochemical cells to produce solar power. Additionally, the Forum presents a special panel discussion of the Business of Nanotechnology, featuring Bay Area entrepreneurs and financiers. In the afternoon, there are four expert panel sessions, discussing the use of nanotechnology to improve medicine, electronics, solar energy, as well as nanotechnology’s implications in public policy. As always, the Nanotechnology Forum features a poster session with researchers from around the Bay Area presenting their cutting-edge work.

In the last few years, the Berkeley Nanotechnology Forum has had 300 - 500 attendees, representing 10 universities, national laboratories, and research institutions, and has exhibited roughly 60 posters, annually. The Berkeley Nanotechnology Forum is a student organized, annual conference held at the Haas School of Business, on the UC Berkeley Campus.

  • Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies
Washington University in Saint Louis, in conjunction with the University of Missouri, the Center for Emerging Technologies, and Innovate Saint Louis, is inviting applications for our National Science Foundation funded Innovation Fellows. We seek individuals with an advanced degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in the engineering, life sciences, nanotechnology, biomedical or medical fields, who have an interest in expanding their understanding of technology transfer and commercialization. These fellowships are ideal for scientists and engineers who wish to immerse themselves in commercialization, industry partnerships, and entrepreneurship. The fellowships are one year in duration and include a competitive stipend and benefits.

Fellows will benefit from an intensive training course on innovation and entrepreneurship, be assigned mentors, and work with the Offices of Technology Management and faculty at Washington University and at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Fellows will interface with researchers to:

    • Identify promising ideas and opportunities
    • Work with venture capital groups and other types investors
    • Learn about the legal issues associated with patents, licensing, and new company formation
    • Have access to a broad cross section of support from Missouri’s nationally recognized Life and Plant Science Coalition.

We ask interested individuals to send their curriculum vitae, the names and contact information for three references, and a cover letter expressing their interest in the program to Ken Harrington.
